4. SOUNDBITE (English) Wyatte Grantham-Philips, Associated Press:
“So earlier this week, a class action lawsuit was filed against Cristiano Ronaldo over his promotions for NFTs that were issued by Binance, which is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world. And the lawsuit basically called Ronaldo’s Promotions to be deceptive and unlawful because of his high profile celebrity status and encouraging folks like the plaintiffs to invest in investments that they later found to be costly and unsafe. So another part of the lawsuit was also that Ronaldo did not disclose or the lawsuit accuses that Ronaldo did not disclose how much money he was making from Binance through this partnership, which is something we’ve seen regulators charge celebrities with in the past through other litigation and other settlements, basically saying that celebrities need to be transparent in their partnerships with cryptocurrency exchanges, including how much money they’re making with those partnerships. So those were the two main takeaways that we saw out of this lawsuit.”

“So Ronaldo’s first collection of NFTs with Binance launched last year, about a year ago today, November 2022, ahead of the World Cup. And it was a collection of seven different NFTs that featured different iconic images and animated statues from Ronaldo’s life.”

“Since then, Rinaldo has advertised his Binance partnership on its social media platforms, including just earlier this week, a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, just saying that something new might be coming. He’s cooking up something with Binance again. So those two are very much linked.”

“So Renaldo is definitely not the first celebrity we’ve seen who has faced litigation over promoting cryptocurrency or NFT assets. In the past, just last year, we think of like FTX, which had a very famous collapse that we saw last November. Another lawsuit came out also pointing towards celebrities ranging from Tom Brady to Larry David about their promotions of crypto assets at the time, and also a very similar argument about their celebrity status, encouraging folks who might not have invested in NFTs or might not be familiar with all the risk going to do that because we saw celebrities do that as well.”
