NFTs have revolutionized how we buy and sell digital art, music, and collectibles. But here’s the catch: owning an NFT doesn’t mean you own the copyright of the underlying art.

When you purchase an NFT, you own the unique blockchain token, not necessarily the intellectual property rights unless explicitly transferred in a smart contract. That means you can’t automatically reproduce, sell merchandise, or commercially exploit the art unless the creator grants those rights.

Under the Indian Copyright Act, 1957, copyright transfers must be in writing. Most NFT sales give you a license for personal use but keep full IP ownership with the creator. For brands, influencers, and creators, it’s crucial to read NFT licensing terms carefully to avoid disputes.
