In 2022, Coachella sold 10 one-of-one NFT “Keys” for over $110,000 each via an FTX-hosted Solana marketplace, granting lifetime VIP access and perks, but FTX’s 2022 bankruptcy left the off-chain artwork and metadata inaccessible even though the tokens still existed on-chain. Coachella worked directly with key holders to ensure benefits were honored and later migrated the utilities by launching a new “Coachella Keepsake” collection on OpenSea and Avalanche in 2024. The episode draws three business lessons: don’t outsource core product dependencies to a single platform, blockchain-based authentication may become valuable in an AI/deepfake world, and true utility should be portable so the value of an offering can survive platform or product changes.
