NFTs are forever — the pictures they point to are not.
The blockchain only stores a string of metadata. The actual image typically sits on a regular web server or IPFS pin paid for by a third party. If that hosting goes down, the token still exists but resolves to a broken link. Thousands of NFTs lost their visuals this way in 2022 when projects went bankrupt and stopped paying hosting bills. Lesson: if your asset depends on someone else paying a recurring bill, you don’t own it — you’re renting permission.
