In March 2021, a JPEG sold at Christie’s for $69.3 million. That year people spent roughly $25 billion on NFTs, and by spring 2022 the cheapest Bored Ape cost about $430,000.

Then the buyers left. Jack Dorsey’s first tweet sold for $2.9 million in 2021. When its owner tried to resell it in 2022, the best offer was around $280. A 2023 study by dappGambl
found that about 95% of the 73,000 NFT collections it checked had no market value. Nike closed its NFT studio, RTFKT, in January 2025.

Bored Apes still trade today, but for more than 90% less than at the peak.

A note on the numbers: estimates of 2021 NFT spending range from about $25 billion to $41 billion depending on the tracker, so we used the lower figure. Bored Ape prices move
